Science egg experiment

Yesterday in Acorn class, we took part in a class experiment. The aim of the experiment was to see if an egg would smash in a bag if it was protected by materials.
For this experiment we would need:
6 boiled eggs
6 sandwich bags
6 different materials

For our experiment we used:
Paper towels (2 to be exact)
Tissues (2 to be exact)
A bowl of packaging foam
Water
A whiteboard cloth
Paper (1 sheet)

Reception went off to predict what they thought would happen. Here are the results and their predictions.

To ensure this was a fair experiment we made sure that we dropped the bags on the same surface. We also made sure we dropped the bag containing the egg at the same height each time.

We had lots of fun with this experiment and cannot wait to do another one soon!

Sport relief

Sport Relief runs from 18-20 March. Sport Relief is a charity event that is in association with BBC Sport. Sport Relief aims to bring together everyone through sport to raise money for vulnerable people both in the UK and other countries.
At Northrepps primary we all came to school wearing sporty clothing. We brought £1 to school to raise money for Sport Relief.
During lesson we played a Sport Relief themed game. We had a board game where we had maths questions. On the board there were squares where we were given the chance to take a card. On the cards there were different orders. For example; hop on one leg 3 times.

We had to jump like a frog 4 times.
We had to do 2 hip circles.
 We jogged on the spot.
We had to do 2 lunges.
We had to hop on one leg 3 times.
 And stretch very very tall!

We really enjoyed this game!

Maths shared learning

On Friday, we had grown ups come in to school and take part in some shared learning. Shared learning is where we show the grown ups what we've been learning about and how we do it. This shared learning session was all about Maths.

In the afternoon we gathered up all of our maths games and put them all around the classroom so people could walk around and choose what they would like to play with.

 We played lots of games.

We loved snakes and ladders.

We used the interactive whiteboard.

We loved playing games with the grown ups! We can't wait until the next shared learning session.

Snettisham Park

Yesterday Acorn class went to Snettisham Park. We went on the minibus and it was a very long journey.
This is a map of our journey. It took us over an hour!

When we arrived, we were greeted by the staff who sat us down and told us what we would be doing that day.
We had break and then at 11am we went to go see some sheep and lambs with our guide Chin.

Whilst we were there a sheep was about to have a baby! We were all so excited to see if she would have it whilst we were there.

We sat down in pairs on some hay bales and waited to be told how to feed the lambs.
Whilst we were being told what to do, Chin was told that a sheep was about to have a baby!

These sheep are all pregnant and expecting their babies at any time. The sheep all have 3 red marks on their coats. The three marks indicate that they're expecting triplets.

We all went over to the pen to have a look. The lamb was unfortunately the wrong way around so the farmers had to help her give birth. It was absolutely amazing and something we were very fortunate to see whilst we were there.
We went back to feeding the lambs, which was very fun. The lambs were very excited and very strong.
We had to use two hands.
We were a little shy at first.
Their tails were wagging because they were excited.
Even though they had finished their milk we let them suck on the bottle for a little longer as Chin told us they like to use it like a dummy.

After we had fed the lambs we had to round them up and put them back in their pens.
We then went to wash our hands.

After that, we went to the chicken pen. Chin told us that the chickens lay an egg every day and that they sell them at the farm shop.
Chin asked for our help to collect the eggs and put them in the basket carefully. We all took it in turns and collected 2 eggs each.
We used two hands to ensure we didn't drop them.

After that, we went back into the farm to sort the eggs. We saw a machine called a grading machine.
The grading machine sorts the eggs into weight order. Large, medium or small.
You have to put the egg sideways and let it roll to the bottom, the machine then picks it up and weighs it. If it is a large egg it will roll into lane 1 or 2. If it is a medium egg the egg will roll into lane 3 or 4. If the egg is a small egg it'll roll into lane 5 or 6.
We had to guess what lane our egg will roll into.
Overall, most of our eggs went into lane 3. This means most of our eggs were medium eggs. Now that they had been weighed it was ready for them to be sold in the farm shop.

After we had all had a go at weighing our eggs it was time for us to feed some goats. Chin went to get us some food whilst we sat and waited. When he came back he told us how to feed them and to not be frightened of them.
We put some food on our hands and held it flat out in front of the goats.
 They were all very excited!
 It tickled.

Once all of our food was gone, we went to visit some cows.
This is a calf feeder.

It was then time to wash our hands ready for lunch.
We were told that after lunch we would be going on a deer safari. We could not wait.

After we ate our lunch we got some free time to play in the little park.
We got to dig up sand using a fun machine.
We got to ride around on  toy tractors.

It was then time for the deer safari! We climbed onto a trailer that was being pulled by a tractor. We had a man talking to us about the deer on a microphone. He was also communicating with the driver through this microphone.
We went through big puddles and we thought we would get stuck! We were told if we got stuck p, we would have to get out and push. Some of us were more excited about this than the others...

Thankfully, we got to the deer park without having to get out and push.
There were lots of deer in this park. As soon as we got into the park they followed the tractor as they knew food was coming.
The deer have lots of missing fur. We asked the guide why this was and he told us that the older deer eat first, when they are finished it is the younger ones turn. If the younger ones step out of line and went to eat first, they would get nipped by the older ones. This is to show who is boss.

Finally, we got back to Snettisham Park and washed our hands. Our day at Snettisham Park was over. We had a lovely time and saw some very interesting, exciting things. We hope to come back again soon!

Norwich Castle museum

On 9th February Acorn class went to Norwich Castle museum. During topic we had learnt all about Florence Nightingale and why she is famous.
We went to Norwich on the minibus and played I spy. We were all so excited to be going to the museum! When we arrived, it wasn't quite 10am so we sat outside enjoying the view whilst eating our fruit.
When we walked in we were taken to an area just outside of the cafe where we would leave our coats and lunch boxes, this was also the place where we ate our lunch.
We then walked through a corridor that had many different animals and noises of birds playing. We reached the middle room where we got introduced to 4 different people.
We were told that our first activity was to look at some items that Florence Nightingale may have had in her suitcase.

Here we have some ink, a pen, money, letters, a mini owl ornament (Florence had a pet owl and this ornament was to remember it).
We were told that the letters that had a black border were letters that contained bad news.

On this mat we had, a little bottle of poison, a comb, a boot hook so that Florence could do up her buttons, a toothbrush that was made out of bone and pig bristle.
Although this wasn't Florence Nightingale's actual suitcase it was a replica. She had her initials on the suitcase so she could identify that it was hers.

In our next session we talked about Florence Nightingale a little more and we saw on a map where she travelled to.
She travelled to Turkey to Scutari hospital to help soldiers who had fought in the Crimean War and were injured.

Florence Nightingale is also known as The Lady with the Lamp. So in our session we made paper lanterns! These were very easy to make and we really enjoyed it. We even put orange tissue paper inside so it looked like it was lit.

Our third and final session was the most exciting of all. We met Florence Nightingale!

Florence Nightingale talked to us about all of the things we had done during the day. She then started to talk about all of the things she had on her table.

She had a brush to scrub the floors clean, a bar of soap (that didn't smell very nice). Florence had a bed pan so that the men who were badly injured could go to the toilet whilst still being in bed. In the picture there is an item that looks like a teapot and a cup mixed into one. This is a soup bowl, this is so that the soldiers can have their soup and not spill it over themselves as they would be laying down when they ate it.

On the table were some bandages. Florence asked us if we would like to try to bandage up our friends hands. So we did.

Florence also talked to us about a lamp she had, it was a very different to any lamp we had seen before.

After we met with Florence it was lunchtime. After lunch, we had a look around the museum. We saw all different things. We saw lots of stuffed animals! We saw a whole corridor filled with teapots, they were all different shapes and sizes.
We went into a room that had some beautiful dresses and jewellery.

We tried on some funny masks.

Next we went into a room that was all about Vikings and dragons! Oak class had been learning all about Vikings so we were very interested to have a look at what they'd been researching about.

We out on some armour and had a mini battle!
We even found a Viking ship!

We left the Viking room and continued on our tour. We saw a gallery that was all about ancient Egypt and mummy's. It was very interesting!

Lastly, we went upstairs to the Castle Keep. We dressed up as Kings and Queens.
That was the end of our visit to Norwich Castle museum. We had so much fun and learnt lots of different, exciting things. We cannot wait to come back and see some more!
